Surgical procedures can be considered as controlled trauma. This course will examine the effects of common procedures on the oral tissues and the mechanisms that may lead to acute complications and long-term sequelae. The impact of local and systemic factors such as medications and disease will be considered as part of an integrated approach to surgical patient management. Approaches to problems such as insufficient soft or hard tissue for implant rehabilitation will be examined from an evidence-based perspective.

  • Understanding how hard and soft tissues heal.
  • Appreciate local and systemic factors that can compromise patient outcomes.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of techniques and procedures used to mitigate surgical complications and hurdles to future treatment.
